The Mathematik / Mathematics bachelor's program in Marburg is based on a clearly developed study program. The objective is to impart a broad theoretical foundation of mathematical knowledge in connection with the study of an elective minor subject. The fundamental terms and basic ideas are first taught and practiced, in order to advance to more complex and abstract contexts bit by bit. The introductory lecture "Fundamentals of Mathematics" facilitates your entry into university-level mathematics and introduces you, as a first-year student, to topics that are important in all fields of mathematics (e.g. proof techniques, assertion and set theory).
Specialized courses and a work placement give you the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary and personal key competencies. Practical relevance and topicality are combined with a scientifically well-founded education, whereby mathematical science methods are particularly employed, more so than engineering science methods.
Major topics
Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Optimization, Stochastics, Numerics, Discrete Mathematics
Objectives
The professional fields for mathematicians are very diverse and predominantly interdisciplinary. There are excellent professional prospects as a result of continually developing fields of work in which well-founded mathematics skills are required. Very interesting extra-disciplinary tasks are also frequently performed with success, because abstract-logical capabilities for analyzing and solving a problem are also of great benefit in other areas and particularly support innovative processes.
Successful graduates are also found outside of universities and research institutions, in practically all areas of industry and the economy. Mathematicians are sought after particularly in software development, in banks and insurance companies, but also in the automobile industry. Their abilities to trace problems to their fundamental core also make them particularly well suited for innovative professional fields such as cellular and genetic research or IT security.
