MSc in Mathematics
-
Mathematics is an essential tool of science. It teaches structured, logical thinking. Mathematics makes it possible to formulate abstract and practical problems, to simplify and to solve them. Its importance grows with society‘s increasing technization – all modern technologies would be impossible without mathematical achievements.
Building on the Bachelor’s studies, the Master’s study program teaches how to conduct scientific work and gives you insights into current research. The study program is designed for flexibility – students can choose lectures from the disciplines of algebra, analysis, geometry, numerical analysis, and stochastics.

The prerequisite is a successfully completed bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics or another mathematics-related subject. Any gaps in basic mathematics training can be closed during the master’s degree.
The other requirements are the same as for the Bachelor's degree in mathematics: enjoyment of mathematics, joy in thinking, accuracy and the ability to abstract as well as the effort to get to the bottom of things. Studying mathematics also requires a lot of diligence, willingness to work, discipline and a high tolerance for frustration. The material of the lectures has to be worked on regularly and thoroughly and exercises have to be solved for deepening. This also includes developing your own solutions and proofs using the methods you have learned.

Mathematicians are generalists in problem solving and can be used wherever logical thinking is required. You can efficiently familiarize yourself with complex issues and therefore also apply for positions that are not limited to mathematics. Mathematical expertise is required as well as superordinate skills such as logical thinking, creativity, flexibility, accuracy and receptivity.
Professional fields are the financial sector (insurance and banking), management consultancy, software development, telecommunications, pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, medicine, research and development in industry, logistics, the automotive industry and much more.
A completed master’s degree in mathematics also opens the door to a doctorate in mathematics or another mathematics-related science area.
