M.Sc in Computer Sciences
The two-subject master’s degree in computer science is geared towards school practice with its subject didactic modules.
In order to expand the professional competence in the two-subject master’s degree in computer science, three elective modules from different areas have to be completed. The modules are to be selected in such a way that they broaden the required IT knowledge in the school-relevant area.
In the first semester, two modules with 7 credit points each from different areas of computer science are to be selected.
In the second semester, you can choose from a module with 7 credit points from practical computer science. In addition, the first subject didactics module must be completed with 5 credit points.
In the third semester, in addition to a further subject didactics module with a further 5 credit points, a module with 4 credit points on IT applications is completed.
The master's thesis is written in the 4th semester and supervised by a research advisor.
The additional skills required for teaching, such as leading discussions and imparting knowledge, are taught in the subject didactics modules and in separate pedagogy, psychology, and internship modules.
The modules of the two-subject master’s course are completed by module exams. Each module examination consists of a final examination and partial exams that are performed during the course. They consist of homework, laboratory exercises, or tests. The type, number, and weighting of the partial examinations are determined for each module by the responsible teacher and communicated to the students at the beginning of the module's courses. The module examination grade is calculated from the weighted mean of the individual grades for the partial examination performances and the grade of the final examination.

From cars to e-commerce to supercomputers - countless pieces of information is systematically processed everywhere in our everyday lives. There is hardly a science that shapes our living and working world as much as computer science. With their help, for example, climate development can be simulated, and safe flight controls can be implemented. Under the catchphrase “artificial intelligence”, computer science is developing new methods of information processing and critically examining their limits and their effects on society.
At the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) you can study computer science as a two-subject master’s course with the profile of business education. You will deepen the specialist knowledge you acquired in your bachelor's degree in various modules, for example on advanced programming, embedded systems, or social media and web science. Didactic and pedagogical modules that build on the bachelor's degree prepare you for your future teaching activities. To do this, you complete a practical semester with various, interdisciplinary networking topics and many practical exercises as well as an extensive school internship. You will be looked after by the Center for Teacher Education (ZfL) at the CAU.
In addition, you will be introduced to the scientific way of working, deal independently with topics of computer science, write your first scientific texts and present your work results.
A successfully completed master’s degree enables you to begin a legal traineeship, then take the second state examination and thus work as a teacher at vocational schools. However, there are also a variety of professional opportunities available to you in the economy and with private educational institutions. In addition, the degree enables the entry into scientific work at research institutions, also with the aim of doing a doctorate
The University of Kiel (or CAU) is a learning community devoted to enabling close interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary collaboration between four priority research areas: KMS - Kiel Marine Science, KLS - Kiel Life Science, KiNSiS - Kiel Nano Surface & Interface Science, and SECC - Societal and Cultural Change.
The University of Kiel is one of only 17 top German universities and two university consortia that offer internationally designed degrees to around 25,000 students. Hence, the university management will continue to rely on the participation of the various groups with an effective strategy of excellence.
