  • MSc in Physics

  • The master’s degree in physics deepens the basic knowledge gained in the bachelor’s degree and imparts specialist knowledge that is based on current research questions. The focus is on research methods, independent and responsible action as well as strategic planning of the procedure and the critical classification of scientific findings. The aim of the course is to enable independent scientific work. In addition, the completion of the master’s degree qualifies for admission to doctoral studies. Through scientific institutions such as the Center for Optical Quantum Technologies (ZOQ), the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and close cooperation such as with the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY), students have the opportunity to work on current research projects.
  • Course structure
  • The course is divided into a specialization phase and a research phase:
  • In the first two semesters there is a specialization as well as the participation in the elective area. The one-year specialization phase serves to expand knowledge in at least one specialization area, based on the main research areas of the department:Accelerator and elementary particle physicsSolid state and nanostructure physicsLaser physics and photonicsAstronomy and astrophysicsBiomedical Physics
  • The one-year research phase follows in the third and fourth semesters, in which students in a research group complete the six-month master's thesis after the familiarization project and the preparatory project.

    Career prospects
The job market offers physicists very good opportunities: The range of activities is diverse and increasingly includes areas of responsibility in interdisciplinary areas. They typically work at research facilities and institutes as well as universities. In addition, physicists are also in great demand in mechanical engineering or vehicle construction companies, in the manufacture of medical devices, in the semiconductor industry, in the energy sector, in data processing services or in software development, as experts in engineering offices and in science journalism. Other fields of activity are in public administration, e.g. in calibration and testing offices or at the Federal Office for Radiation Protection.
