The use of computers for scientific purposes is very important in many natural sciences. Experiments and their evaluation are used in many areas today B. in life science or physics, carried out with computer support Computer-aided forecasting and simulation processes will also play a central role in chemistry, meteorology and nanotechnology in the future. The Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences therefore offers an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in which scientists are trained for interdisciplinary research and development by combining information-mathematical and natural-science teaching content.
The bachelor's degree "Computing in Science" deals with the development and application of computer-aided methods in the context of natural sciences. The degree includes the areas of computer science, mathematics, a natural science focus subject and natural scientific computer science. In the course, students acquire initial professional skills and knowledge with extensive theoretical knowledge Fundamentals as well as methodological knowledge and skills. It imparts the ability to apply techniques and concepts from mathematics and computer science independently and enables students to act responsibly, particularly with regard to the effects of technological change.
The course is aimed at interdisciplinary students and provides an ideal basis for further studies and activities in the field of applied computer science with a focus on science and technology. The Department of Computer Science offers the interdisciplinary course together with the Center for Bioinformatics and the departments of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

As part of the application, one of the two scientific focal points biochemistry or physics is selected. In the biochemistry major, you can choose between the biochemistry and chemistry majors in the middle of your studies. The following areas are dealt with intensively in the course of the course:
-
Computer science, software development, theoretical and practical computer science
-
Mathematical models as the basis of computer-aided processes
-
the selected scientific focus (physics or biochemistry), in particular the theoretical parts of the subject
-
Computing in Science (modeling and problem solving of scientific issues with a focus on using mathematical and IT methods)
-
Additional elective modules from mathematics, computer science and the main subject can be chosen to supplement the range of methods.

A master’s degree can be completed in different disciplines, depending on the focus. In addition to M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Intelligent Adaptive Systems and M.Sc. The following options are available to IT management and consulting at Universität Hamburg:
-
Focus on biochemistry: M.Sc. Bioinformatics - with the option to specialize in genome informatics, structural bioinformatics or cheminformatics.
-
Focus on physics: M.Sc. Physics (with suitable physics elective selection)
