    Description

    General:

By studying a master’s degree as part of the ISE study program, the scientific qualification acquired through a previous bachelor’s degree is deepened and expanded in the sense of increasing technical complexity through the expansion of specialist knowledge and the practice of special specialist methods. As part of the consecutively designed ISE study program, the master’s examination forms a second professional qualification, which significantly expands professional perspectives compared to the bachelor’s degree. The master’s examination determines whether the students have acquired the advanced specialist knowledge, skills and methods necessary for the transition to professional practice, have an overview of more comprehensive subject-specific contexts and have the ability to to analyze engineering problems in the area of the selected course of study and to independently develop and apply scientific methods and findings to describe or solve them. Passing the master’s examination also allows admission to a doctorate and thus enables a scientific career.

A particular aim of the master’s courses in ISE is to prepare graduates for the global job market or research and development in an international context. This is achieved through the specialist orientation of the degree programs or certain components in the degree programs.

    Automation and Control Engineering (M.Sc.):

With constantly increasing demands on high system reliability and availability, the subject of process monitoring, fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant systems is becoming increasingly important both in research and in industrial applications. Applications can be found beyond classic control and regulation technology in industry in the area of developments under the catchphrase "Industry 4.0", distributed systems and similar areas that arise from the merging of classic areas of application (e.g. in mechatronics) and distributed working methods.

The course in the master’s course “Automation and Control Engineering” builds on the fundamentals that were taught in the bachelor’s course “Electrical and Electronic Engineering”.

The following areas are deepened as further in-depth basics:

  • Mathematics (including vector analysis, numerical mathematics) and additional physical basics (fluid dynamics),
  • Automation technology (with in-depth theoretical methods),
  • IT (real-time systems and distributed computer systems).
  • In addition to application subjects, error diagnosis and error tolerance in technical systems are dealt with, which are of particular importance in view of the complexity of modern technical systems with a high risk potential.

The master’s degree enables you to solve particularly complex or demanding tasks. The following special goals are aimed at:

  • Basic ability to familiarize oneself with theoretically complex topics,
  • Ability to solve even complicated automation tasks that require sophisticated methods of modeling, simulation and control.
  • Therefore, the following areas of activity come into question for master’s graduates:

  • Research,
  • Project management,
  • leading positions with personal responsibility.
  • Automation and Control Engineering students at the University of Duisburg-Essen will deepen their understanding in the areas of mathematics (e.g. vector analysis and numerical mathematics), advanced principles of physics (e.g. fluid dynamics), automation technology (with enhanced theoretical methods) and computer science (real-time systems and distributed computer systems).
