Program Description 

  • AAU’s location in Central Europe creates an academic community where students can experience individual and collaborative problem-solving in small, interactive, and culturally diverse classes. Personal and cultural histories flavor the program’s curriculum to create unparalleled education in International Relations and Diplomacy.
  • Globalization has created a new type of international environment, that challenges the known world order and demands reflection. The Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program encourages students to identify, understand and criticize current geopolitical trends, conflicts and social movements with high academic proficiency.
  • The graduate program in International Relations and Diplomacy builds on theory and conceptual knowledge of world affairs with an emphasis on their application in individual or collective research in the fields of international relations, conflict studies, globalization and development or diplomatic history. The curriculum offers a broad range of elective courses allowing our students to pursue their interests and fruther develop critical thinking. Throughout studies, our graduate students cultivate their skills in research methods, diplomatic protocol or thesis writing seminar in preparation for work in governmental or non-governmental organizations, diplomacy, think tanks and academic institutions, as well as in international business organizations.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy can expect to:

  • Have an advanced knowledge and proficiency in the practice of international relations, diplomacy, international political economy, social theory, and research methods
  • Make strong use of leadership and decision-making strategies in multicultural, collaborative situations
  • Have experience in managing complex research assignments independently and in groups of international colleagues, and make decisions by negotiation and collaboration
  • Understand and uphold civic responsibility, identify ethical problems, and resourcefully structure debate with respect to civil society, colleagues, and opponents
  • Have a critical understanding of foundational histories of world powers in pre-modern and modern history

Program Structure

International Relations and Diplomacy is a 2-year study program. Students have to accumulate 60 US credits (120 ECTS credits) by completing 20 courses.
