Program Description

  • This program is unique in that students acquire knowledge from different aspects of the art world, preparing them for a better variety of options in the future, including the pursuit of an MFA (Master in Fine Arts). The studio art classes are all taught by internationally recognized and active artists.
  • Visual Art Studies also requires an interdisciplinary liberal arts foundation, and limited electives in Humanities and Media Studies are encouraged. By studying sociology, psychology, media studies, politics and economics, students develop critical and informed thinking about humanitarian and social issues, which is such a part of the contemporary art scene.
  • Students in this program thus gain a deeper or more sophisticated grasp of art history and art theory beyond usual art-studio focused programs, thus giving them a distinct competitive advantage for local and international pursuits.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the B.A. in Visual Art Studies program can expect to:

  • Learn and participate in all of the various aspects of the contemporary art world
  • Develop skills in art studio electives according to each student’s own level of expertise and interest
  • Understand the complex world of art from historical, theoretical and economical perspectives
  • Be qualified for advanced studies in art history or art studio, and research and curatorial or art fellowships
  • Communicate professionally, decisively and strategically in verbal and written English; our graduates are able to identify, describe and discuss complex issues and debates to international audiences

The B.A. program in Visual Art Studies prepares students to work in new media, graphic design and advertising, as well as in museums, galleries, exhibition venues, heritage protection and conservation, public administration institutions and NGOs focused on art. This program is also an ideal primer for pursuit of an MFA.
